Classical Song Recital at Elmslie House, Malvern - Sunday 19th February 2023 3.30 pm (doors 3 pm).

Soprano Erika Mädi Jones and pianist Panaretos Kyriatzidis are set to perform at Elmslie House, Malvern on Sunday 19th February 2023.

The award-winning duo will present a classical song recital inspired by Valentine’s Day titled ‘Truly, Madly, Deeply’. The programme will feature Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder alongside songs by Robert and Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, Edward Elgar, Benjamin Britten amongst others, all on the theme of intense love and devotion.

The recital will commence at 3.30 pm (doors open at 3 pm). Refreshments available before and after the performance.

About Erika and Pan:

Soprano Erika Mädi Jones and pianist Panaretos Kyriatzidis met in 2011 at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, united by a shared love of turn-of-the-century song.

They have performed across the UK, notably at the London Song Festival, Three Choirs Festival and Britten’s Library at Aldeburgh. They have been broadcast as part of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Recital series and performed as guests on BBC Radio 3 InTune.

The duo won first prize at the Elisabeth Schumann Lieder competition, the Song and Accompanist's prize at the Emmy Destinn Awards and the London Song Festival Duo prize for English song. They have taken part in masterclasses at the Oxford Lieder and London Song Festivals and as Britten Pears Young Artists.

About Erika:

Celebrated as a singer who can deliver a performance of great intensity and resonance yet still maintain contrast and nuance, soprano Erika Mädi Jones debuted to critical acclaim as Elisabeth in Wagner’s Tannhäuser at Longborough Festival Opera in summer 2016. Opera credits include: Sieglinde, Die Walküre (Edinburgh Opera Players), Ellen Orford, Peter Grimes (Dartington International Music Festival), Donna Anna, Don Giovanni, (Moon-Little Theatre & Co Opera Co). Micaëla in Bizet’s Carmen (Rogue Opera), Leonore, Fidelio (Guildford Opera), 2nd Lady, Die Zauberflöte (in a workshop with Simon McBurney/ Complicite ahead of his new staging of Die Zauberflöte for De Nederlandse Oper).Equally at home on the stage or concert platform, Erika has performed at festivals across the UK. A recent highlight includes performing Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder at the International St Magnus Festival with the Royal Scottish National Symphony Orchestra.

Winner of the British Song Competition at the 2018 London Song Festival and the 2017 Dvořák Society for Czech and Slovak Music Prize at the Emmy Destinn Young Singers competition. Erika was highly commended in the finals of the 2015 UK Wagner Society singing competition and a semifinalist in the 9. Internationale Wagnerstimmen Wettbewerb in Germany in 2018. She was awarded first prize in the 2013 Elisabeth Schumann Lieder Duo competition and second prize in the Roy Pleasance Competition that same year. Erika is supported by Help Musicians UK, and is the recipient of the Goodall scholarship from the UK Wagner Society, Friends in New York of TCM London Award/ Edgar TP Comley Certificate of Excellence. She was a chorister at Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2015 and a Britten Pears Young Artist in 2016.

Erika lives in South Shropshire where she enjoys spending lots of time in the open air with her family and Otto the cockerpoo.

About Panaretos:

Panaretos Kyriatzidis is increasingly sought after as a collaborative performer, vocal coach and musical director. A Britten Pears young artist, Panaretos has been a finalist in numerous national and international competitions and has won the Gerald Moore Award, Oxford Lieder Young Artist Platform, the Emmy Destinn Awards Accompanist prize and the duo prize at the London Song Festival.

A native of the Greek island of Thassos, Panaretos holds a BA in Law from the Aristotlee University of Thessaloniki and is an avid food lover.

Panaretos (aka Pan) completed his postgraduate studies in piano performance under Martino Tirimo and Eugene Asti at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where he was subsequently appointed junior fellow in accompaniment.

During this time he was awarded the David Gosling Prize for excellence in accompaniment/collaborative performance and twice the John Thompson Prize for chamber music, and he won first prize in the Elisabeth Schumann Lieder Competition, the English Song Competition, The Leonard Smith, Felicity Young Duo Competition, the Il Circolo Solo Piano Competition and The Cavatina Chamber Music Competition.

He also accompanied rising stars Nardus Williams and James Newby in their respective wins at the Trinity Laban Gold Medal Award.

Between 2016-2018 Panaretos musically directed four opera productions for the King’s Head Theatre, which garnered high praise from press and audiences alike, an Off-West-End Award/Offie (Tosca), and an Olivier Award nomination for best opera production, following a transfer to the Trafalgar Studios at the West End (La bohéme).

Panaretos has performed in many of the UK’s most prestigious venues and broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. He is a member of staff at Trinity Laban and at Morley College, official vocal coach for Voice of Black Opera competition and co-founder of The Opera Makers, a new dynamic collective aspiring to broaden the potential offringe and studio opera. Forthcoming projects include a puppet version of La serva padrona at the Little Angel Theatre and a radical adaptation of Turandot for Grimeborn 2023.
