Malvern Welcomes announces an evening of Syrian music
The 'Queen of Qanun' Maya Youssef will be playing music on her qanun, a 78 stringed Middle Eastern plucked zither. Maya's music is rooted in the Arab Classical tradition but also diverges into jazz, Western classical and Latin traditions.
Maya grew up in Damascus and is now based in the UK. Both Maya's albums Syrian Dreams and Finding Home have been highly acclaimed around the world, and both express her overwhelming sense of loss for her homeland and for loved ones.
For Maya, music is the opposite of death and destruction, it is a life - and hope - affirming act and an antidote to what is happening, not only in Syria, but in other parts of the world.
