Jess Morgan – Saturday 22nd April 2017

“something truly special.” – Folk Radio UK // “absolutely addictive” – The National Student Jess Morgan is a songwriter’s songwriter. October 2016 will see the release of a confident new record from this young British voice. Expect a tumbler of unfancified roots music – with heart, with passion, with gusto. In October 2016 Jess takes the songs from ‘Edison Gloriette’ on the road – and will be backed up by The Light Band’ helping to bring the songs and the stories behind them to life. Over the past few years Jess has been making a noise in the UK and further afield with a string of albums comprised of acutely observed, beautifully delivered country-folk ballads. The songs are intimate, but not in that earnest, quiet way. There’s fire in Jess’ voice, the way it soars between notes like a bird in flight. It’s intimate, but it’s end of the night, lock-in at the bar, let’s get the nice whiskey out, intimate and has over recent years attracted the ears of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show, Bob Harris Sunday, BBC 6 Music, Folk Radio UK, R2, Uncut, The Guardian and The Telegraph. Here at Elmslie we are delighted that Jess

Ian Sherwood returns to Elmslie House – Saturday May 13th

Sherwood is a musician, story teller and a constant creator. He has penned tunes for many other artists as well as for theatre, film and television. He was named Contemporary Singer of the Year by the 2013 Canadian Folk Music Awards, Best Male Artist of the Year by the 2012 International Acoustic Music Awards and was the 2008 and 2010 Music Nova Scotia Musician Of The Year. Bob Mersereau of CBC Radio, Fredericton described him as “… a natural performer who entertains as much with his wit and stories as with his songs.” Starting his music career as an in-demand saxophone player in Toronto, Sherwood soon began looking for an outlet for his poetic side. His unique musicianship combined with his tales of heart-break, victory and adventure quickly gained recognition as a solid performer, lyricist and player. “… impressive guitar work amid catchy hook lines galore, surely the main thought in the room was, “Yep. It’s only a matter of time before he’s a household name.”” -Todd MacLean, Charlottetown Guardian Having already played to a raptuous audience last time he was in the UK on tour, we just had to ask him back! If you missed him play last time

Jenny Hallam – Saturday 24th June

Talented and quirky singer-songwriter Jenny Hallam, charms audiences with her whimsical piano joviality. Nurtured in her home-town of Malvern, she collected songs to take to London, performing in some spectacular venues where she released her début album ‘25,000 days’ in 2012. Many of her thoughtful songs on this album revolve around the expression of time – the title track ‘25,000 days’ being about the average life-span of a human!  Armed with only her keyboard, and occasionally double-bass accompaniment, Jenny will take you on an entertaining journey of fun, verve and character which will make you realise just how little time 25,000 days really is. You can find her on the below links: www.jennyhallam.co.uk www.facebook.com/jennyhallammusic @JennyHallamusic www.soundcloud.com/jenny-hallam Tickets are available here (below, via Pay-pal) or if you are passing the house, we always have tickets here too, so do please call in. Somatics Basics of Movement Classes – Thursdays 5.45pm

Sarah Stevens will be running her Somatics class to keep your moving more freely and painlessly. What does one learn in a Somatics class/workshop? Somatic education classes focus on your experience of your bodily senses. For example, “What do feel when you move that part of your body?” During each movement, you will bring attention to what it feels like to relax a muscle as well as which muscles are used in the movement. Keeping your attention on the sensations involved in the movement is a key component in gaining voluntary control over the sensory-motor system to more effectively engage and relax the muscles as necessary. You will be coached to make all movements slow, engaging their complete attention in the movement. To help maintain focus, most movements are done lying on the floor to take out the need to use one’s attention to balance freeing the mind to focus its attention solely on the movement. This makes the class accessible for most levels of physical ability. If you have further questions whether this class is appropriate for your needs, please contact me. Class sessions and workshops may vary in theme, but are designed to be part of a well-rounded curriculum
